The main conference programme starts today, and kicks off with a few remarks from the conference chairs.
Some notable points:
- ICML 2024 saw a 44%(!) increase in submissions over 2023
- This is the first year ICML took submissions for position papers — papers that “discuss an ongoing trend, or advocate for a particular viewpoint or perspective on the field”
- 39% of attendees are students
- There’s improved childcare this year, making it easier for parents to attend

The test of time award was won by DeCAF: A Deep Convolutional Activation Feature for Generic Visual Recognition (arxiv link). Trevor Darrell will present on Thursday.
